Tips On Better Search Engine Optimization For Your Website

More and more websites are created each day compared to the early days of the web. With all these various websites and similarities between them, you may ask yourself what the best possible way is to get your website shown to as many people as possible. A lot of search engines today have a very complex algorithm that enables them to “crawl” through your website and rank them to specific keywords that many users may be searching for. If your website is not SEO(Search Engine Optimization) friendly, you might be losing your potential target audience.

In this article, I’ll go over the basics and various tips of Search Engine Optimization for your website.

1. Content is King

Most of us have heard this before, but if you’re one of the few who haven’t then don’t worry. All it means is that the content on your page that you’re on should relate to the subject of your site.

For example, you may have blog where in one article you talk about web design. Well, that would mean you would most likely talk about various details and specifics of web design within that blog post and not about, say, elephants or some sort. To get a better search engine result, you want your content to relate to the topic at hand. Therefore your article should relate to and be all about web design.

Also, unique and quality content greatly help to index your site. By creating unique and quality content, search engines can better index and rate your content with much more relevancy.

2. Keywords

Back in the days, keyword stuffing in the <meta> tags used to be the best way to rank your websites to the top of the list. Until, of course, search engines became more robust and began banning and blacklisting those websites that used keywords not relating to that particular site. In most cases today, one of the best ways to help rank higher in search engines is to provide keywords that relate to your content.

For example, if I were to write a blog about web design, I would write within my content various keywords that relate to web design such as CSS3, HTML5, JavaScript, etc.

3. Hierarchy

Hierarchy is the basis on which your content is displayed and how it helps to distinguish what is a heading, paragraph, navigation, etc.

You want to make sure that your content is being displayed correctly under a specific hierarchy so that search engines can better appropriate your content within your site. Also, by creating a hierarchy of content, your website will be better indexed by search engines thus helping your site rank higher within their search results.

 4. Links

Creating backlinks using keywords as part of the url and linking to related portions of your site can help searchbots navigate throughout your site and index it properly. By relating links to the content within that page, you help to create a more robust network of pages that relate to one another.

However, you definitely don’t want to link to other pages that don’t relate to the content within your page just for the sole purpose of creating more backlinks. That will cause your link relationship to your content unreliable and thus diminish your content search results.

Also, make sure that your main navigation is easily labeled and relevant to the pages that it links to.

Lastly, be careful with broken links as they count to negatively impact search results. Try and stay up to date on links throughout your site.

5. Images, Titles, Alt Text

When creating assets and images for your website, make sure(at minimum) you add Alt text to your images. This not only helps searchbots to index your images properly, but it also helps users with disabilities who may be viewing your site through a screen reader. By doing this, it allows search engines to make your site more reachable to many more users and also helps to index the images on your site.

Here’s an example of adding an Alt text to your images:

&lt;img src="http://my/image/location/img.jpg" alt="description of the image" /&gt;

Also, searchbots cannot index an image solely on the image alone since it doesn’t know what the picture actually is. You have to tell the searchbot what the image actually is for them to index it. That’s where Alt text comes in handy. By adding an Alt Text to your images, search engines can crawl through the html tag and look for that Alt text to help index the image on your site, thus helping your website become more relevant when people search for images online.

 6. Create Constant Content

By creating fresh content to your website, searchbots can crawl through your site much more and bring significant relevancy through each crawl. Search engines love crawling through new content which helps your site become more relevant to users searching for new information within your website.

Also, creating new content helps to distinguish the relevancy of your entire website through keywords and text established by creating that new content. Don’t be afraid of adding a blog to your existing site as it may greatly help add freshness to a rather static site.

 7. Conclusion

As you can see, by taking these small and important steps, you can greatly increase the traffic and relevancy of the content within your website. It’s not very difficult to execute these simple rules. It just takes a few minutes of your time to fully incorporate these rules to your own site. Hopefully then you will you be able to see your website rank higher in search engine results.
